In Seattle and other urban areas, raising chickens has been gaining in popularity, but for those with backyard coops, the dangers (and diseases) associated with animals are largely unknown. Heather Fowler (School Of Public Health in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences) will offer an overview of the history of backyard poultry ownership, and how to stay safe around birds. The second half of this program features John Trochta (School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences), who’ll explain that Herring, while a common canned snack, are also a critical source of food for other animals and income for fishing communities. He’ll explain their far-reaching impacts, changing abundance in the ocean, and whether or not we should be worried about low numbers of this critical resource.
Double Feature (!) with Joe Wilson at 7:30pm. UW students (with Husky card) get in for free.
